The Absolute Construction in Modern English Nature and Diversity

The paper was presented at the Eighth Scientific Conference for Young Researchers at the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, which took place on 20 May 2011 in the city of Sofia, Bulgaria

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the main characteristic features of the English absolute construction, as well as its use and functioning in written and spoken present-day English. The corpus of examples is from narrative and technical texts and from spoken language. The excerpted material is analyzed and classified according to various criteria. The accent falls on the diversity of such constructions and their function in Modern English.
